Overview

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is an international non-governmental organization based in Cologny, Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded on 24 January 1971 by German engineer Klaus Schwab.

The foundation's stated mission is "improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas". The Forum states that the world is best managed by a self-selected coalition of multinational corporations, governments and civil society organizations (CSOs), which it expresses through initiatives like the "Great Reset" and the "Global Redesign".

The foundation is mostly funded by its 1,000 member multi-national companies.

  • The new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating, becoming an important driving force for global economic development. The widespread application of technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence is also driving the reshaping of the global higher education system. On one hand, digital technology supports ubiquitous, personalized teaching and learning; disciplines related to big data and artificial intelligence are constantly integrating, and a new paradigm of scientific research is emerging; technology also expands university exchange and cooperation models. On the other hand, higher education faces many challenges: How to accurately grasp the laws of education and make technology truly empower talent cultivation, academic research, and management services? How to cultivate teachers' and students' digital and intelligent literacy? How to develop "people-oriented" smart education? How to fully play the role of think tanks of educational and research institutions to provide strong support for the sustainable development of the global economy and society? To respond to opportunities and challenges, we call for strengthening global exchanges and cooperation, jointly exploring higher education in the era of technological transformation, and providing theoretical support and policy suggestions for the harmonious development of human society. In response to the high concern of this forum on technological transformation, responding to the United Nations' call for digital technology to empower education at the Education Transformation Summit, and helping to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, Peking University will jointly host the "Rethinking and Reshaping: Global Higher Education under Technological Transformation" forum to jointly explore the future of global higher education under this huge change.
